The UNDP Seoul Policy Centre for Global Development Partnerships is seeking interns for a period of up to 6 months beginning in late August 2012.

Interns must be enrolled in a graduate level degree to be eligible.

Background

UNDP Seoul Policy Centre is looking for qualified interns for a period of six months starting end August 2012 to support its work in the areas of research, policy advocacy and communications.

The UNDP Seoul Policy Centre for Global Development Partnerships was established by UNDP and the Government of Korea in the end of 2010.

  • It undertakes policy analysis and research on global partnerships for development, with particular emphasis on the role of new and emerging donors in a changing international aid environment.
  • It facilitates knowledge sharing among countries, in particular middle-income countries (and countries aspiring for the middle-income status in the near future) on challenges faced by them as they move up the ‘development ladder’.
  • It promotes global partnerships for development through policy dialogue and knowledge sharing in the spirit of triangular cooperation.

The Republic of Korea graduated to a high-income status in 2001 after the implementation of a series of far-reaching reforms. Its experience of the past decades has attracted the attention from middle-income countries that draw inspiration from this remarkable transformation and seek concrete solutions for existing problems.

Learning expectations

The internship is expected to be a mutually beneficial experience, whereby the Center gets quality input which contribute to its work from the interns, and the interns are provided guidance and coaching, with specific learning in the following areas.

  • Gain knowledge on UN System and UNDP, in particular its work on development issues;
  • Research experience in one of the UNDP Seoul Policy Centre’s priority policy areas
  • Communications and outreach within the Republic of Korea and beyond.
  • Participation in knowledge sharing through specialized networks and a broad range of initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Terms of reference: Internship Programme, UNDP Seoul Policy Centre

The interns will be expected to work on a range of issues, including research in the priority thematic areas, communication, report writing and support to other activities of the Centre. Working under the supervision of the Centre’s Director and staff, the interns will:

  • Conduct in-depth research on designated and jointly determined topics in areas of priority of the Centre, including the challenges of the middle income countries, social protection, e-governance, MDGs and the post-2015 agenda and development effectiveness;
  • Conduct bibliographical review, data collection and analysis on selected development issues and present them in the form of a report;
  • Help organize thematic meetings and prepare relevant reports;
  • Support the Centre’s communication activities including the website, newsletters, brochures;
  • Assist in the organizations of public events;
  • Carry out additional tasks in support of the Centre’s work as required.
Competencies
  • The candidate must have good written and spoken English and Korean
  • The candidate must have excellent research or communications skills.
Required Skills and Experience
  • The candidate must be a graduate student (Second university degree or higher), currently enrolled in a university programme at the time of application and for the full period of the internship.
