 PUBLIC POLICY FORUM

The Influence of Media on U.S.-Korea Relations
& Future of the Korean Peninsula

Date:  Monday, June 28, 2010
Venue:  Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry building, Mid-Conference Room B

Sponsored by:
KOREAN-AMERICAN ASSOCIATION & FRIENDS OF THE ASIA FOUNDATION

Introduction

Over the sixty years of US-Korea alliance, media has played a key role in influencing decision making between the two countries and shaping views toward North Korea. Meanwhile, media organization and technology is changing rapidly, opening new opportunities and new challenges. This conference aims to bring together American and Korean journalists and experts on media to examine the extent and nature of media coverage of US-Korea issues in both countries, and discuss how media continue to influence US-Korea relations. Given the continuing tensions related to North Korea, and the closed nature of that society, media coverage of the North in both countries plays an unusually large role in influencing public perceptions and policy. South Korean media and American media have different levels and channels of access to information on North Korea, and this should be examined in order to understand the perceptions that they create in the two countries.

The purpose of this forum is to analyze and discuss the role of media in both the United States and Korea in framing and affecting the debate in the two countries over the U.S.-Korea alliance and the broader relationship. Given a number of critical issues currently facing bilateral relations (including the KORUS FTA, transfer of wartime operational control, and positioning for contingencies in North Korea), it will be useful to discuss how media in both countries address and help shape these issues.

We invite you to attend the forum, listen to the presentations and actively join the discussion.
